gear lube leaking

I have a 1989 cobra. Had it in water for a short time and noticed a strong odor. Gear lube got into the bilge took it apart and replaced the seal. 20 min after itwas in the water again theburned oil smell. Very strong. Same thing, lube forced into bilge. Any ideas what problem can be?

You found gear lube in the u-joint bellows?

Yes then went through gimbal into bilge. When I drained the outdrive less then a quart left both times. Not sure but that much so quick, cant just be a seal. And I replaced it the first time it happened
