I recently started up my (early 1980's) 9.9 Johnson and noticed white grease floating to the surface from the water intake holes above the cavity plate. When the motor was in gear this seemed to disappear. When the motor was pulled out a gray sludge also ran out from the intake holes. What could be my problem?

Also where is the serial or model # kept on the motor? I found one such #s ona rond disk on the head. C8183878.: rolleyes:

Re: gear case trouble?

there should be a screen across the water intake openings. If gray sludge is coming out holes in the lower unit, they're probably just drain holes and gray sludge is normal--just unburnt fuel which is common, especially if you ran it in a barrel. I'd almost bet you have NO PROBLEM.
