Gasket or No Gasket

I think I know the answer to this, but would just like verification before proceeding. I have a '94 OMC 5.0 (outdrive mod. no. 3868076, ser. no. T00786475) and am ready to assemble the outdrive to the pivot housing. I ordered a gasket set for the D-shaped O-ring which goes around the water intake line. The gasket set covers about 10 years and includes a paper gasket that is basically the outline of the mating surfaces between the outdrive and the pivot housing, but not quite. My unit has the shift cable coming through a hole and I would have to cut out about a half-inch section of the paper gasket to allow it to fit. Finally, there was no evidence of a gasket when I took it apart. I assume the paper gasket is for another year and/or model and I should just reassemble with only the D-shaped O-ring and omit the paper gasket. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

Re: Gasket or No Gasket

I looked at a parts diagram for the year and it didn't show the paper gasket on the one I looked at (50FAGPMDM). Do you have the model number similar to the one above. It is probably on the valve cover? It is important to have a good seal there to keep water in and out of the proper places.

Yes, that's exactly why I'm paranoid about it! Mine is model no. 502ACPMDA and serial no. T01273501. Thanks for your help.
