Gasket Adhesive on Intake Manifold Gasket

I am installing a new intake manifold gasket on my 1986 Merc 170. Is it ok to use a little gasket adhesive in spots to keep it in place while I am getting everything together? The guy at the shop says I don't need to, but it seems like it will make the job a little easier.

Best thing to do is get a couple of long bolts and cut the heads off of them. Screw one into each end of the head. Slide the gasket on, then slide the intake on. Put the rest of the bolts in, remove the two guide studs and replace with the correct bolts.

Wow, never would have thought of that. I will give that a try. Do you think Home Depot would be able to match the threads? It is much closer than the boat stores.

Yes, HD, or an auto parts store, or hardware store. They are just standard SAE bolt sizes. Just take one with you to match threads with.

you can also use a section of #2 pencil with tape wrapped around it as a dowel. yes, home depot will have bolts with the same threads.

Got the long screws and ready to go, but can't find the torque specs. I have the merc manual, but can't seem to find the info. Maybe 2 many beers on the 4th.

Done. Thanks guys. The long bolts with the heads cut off made this a very simple job.
