Gas tank interior coatings

I have removed the rust from my '68 Evinrude "Mate" gas tank and rebuilt the filler neck with JB Weld. I would like to coat the interior with something that would be impervious to gas and oil. I am going to all this trouble out of necessity; I am having a hard time locating another tank. With the new manual, I have completely restored this little motor with the tank as my last problem. Does anyone know of an interior coating for old tanks?

Why not go to Wal-Mart and buy a plastic tank for < $20, instead of messing with an old, rusty tank [which will foul the carb]?

That's gonna be the problem you'll have with any coating you put in there. It's gonna flake off and stop things up.

c/6

Hooty

I believe that on the mate the tank is mounted on the engine. Thats probably why one is so hard to locate.

Brill,At one time I worked for a motorcycle shop and there was a two-part kit you could buy to line old tanks on motorcycles. As far as I can remember it worked o.k. That's been over ten years ago. I'm sure there still something out there and it's probably better by now.

The Eastwood Company sells the tank liner for car projects. Guess it would work the same.

Rob

Brill, How did you get the rust out of the gas tank? I have a 1973 Evinrude 2 hp Mate with a rusty tank. On this model, the tank is also attached to the motor.
