Gas springs

This should be simple! But I want to make sure I do it right! I'm adding two gas springs, with hardware to,two storage compartments. The don't have any at this time. I made sure the brackets I bought would clear and work. I used the same size spring (I call them shocks) that is used on my main tackle storage lid! I'm curious if there is a set way to place them? Or formula to work out? I had planed on set them about 1/2 to 1/4 way up lid. Then set bottom where it will hold it open at angle I want. I know to make sure it will collapse and not bind.
Trivial I Know. But I looked at a new boat similar to mine yesterday and they didn't have it on rim (edge), but in center of lid to outside edge?

McMaster Carr has a great selection of gas springs at a very reasonable prices and they delivery overnite for a few dollars.
