Gas smell in ski locker

I have a 2005 Bayliner 195 with a 3.0 I/O purchased about a Month ago. The boat has a gas smell whenever I lift up the ski locker cover. I don't have any gas in the bilge area. I have looked at the gas line in, the fuel pump line, carb fuel line and fuel vent line. I don't see any gas leaks. I did however smell gas from the fuel sending unit gasket, and replace the gasket and screws. I went on the boat today, it had been 2 weeks, and when I open the ski locker I smell gas. Its a plastic tank. Any suggestions? Is there any easy way to remove the tank if this is my problem?

If it`s good enough to smell ,it`s good enough to blow.
What you can do is cap the fill ,feed (with a T fitting for a air valve and gauge), and vent and slightly pressurise it with 3-4 lbs of air.
Being plastic it may be "bleeding" from a rub .

This is not I/O related so it might be better to post this question in the
Boat Restoration and Building section (or Boat topics and questions NOT I/O related)!!!!!! MAN, that was fast!!! I love getting moved whilst posting!!!


Now having said that you evidently have a leak somewhere in the fuel system. The only way to find those kind of leaks is to pressurize the system (to no more than about 3 psi or so) and use soapy water to look for bubbles.

This would include everywhere from the fuel inlet pipe (on the deck) to the vent system.

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air so once the vapor is in the bilge it can, with a little airflow end up in other places inside the boat.

Open the dog house when storing boat untill next run and see if you still have gas smell in ski locker.

I always keep my ski locker lid propped open with my throwable float, just to keep water, mildew, fumes etc from building up while not in use. May also want to hose it out and let all of the water drain out the bilge. Get rid of any gas from the sending unit leak leave lid up for a week or so then check with your nose. If the gas smell comes back you have another leak somewhere and it needs to be addressed pronto. To remove the tank is a bit of work but if it is leaking, your going to have to just do it.

Ditto on our 2005 Bayliner 4.3L Merc. I just dropped off it off at the shop this afternoon for winterizing and a few other minor fixes, and I completely forgot to tell them about this issue. Curious to hear what you find out.

I have a 17' Starcraft C-Star with the same issue, i have never seen a leak anywhere either. Strange.
