Hi, I have an 1984 Grady white overnight 20 and in the cuddy it reeks of gas. I took the cover off to look at the stanless gas tank and there is no apperant leak or smell at the tank. All the hoses are in tight and in the rear of the boat. I just can't figure out why or where the smell is comming from. It is only in the cuddy. Any one ever hear of this?

Thank You, Dave T.

Could it be that the overflow tube has come off from the tank?
Can you see the inside of the hull around the tank? Is there any water there that you can see a oil film on the water?
Be sure and find the cause of the fumes before taking out on the lake again.
It could result in having the boat hull even with the water line.:eek::eek:

There are three hoses to the tank and all are good. No oil slick around the baot. I took the floor off to inspect the tank and there is no smell around the tank. Really wierd...

Thank You.

To completely rule out the tank as a possible source you would need to get it pressure tested. It's easy to do it yourself but limit your p.s.i. to three ( 3)
pounds max pressure.
A Google search will give you the specifics you need.

Re: Gas Smell In Cuddy

I owned a 1986 Overnighter for 5 years and experienced the same thing.

The solution, change out all the fuel lines. All my hoses where dry rotted and the fill hose was actually the worst. Where the hose was resting on the floor had actually rusted through the cords and was permeating quite badly.

The other issue is the tank. Unless that tank was changed out in the past it's aluminum and the life expectancy is 10-15 years tops. I removed mine and did a visual inspection and found a lot of corrosion on the bottom and underneath the boards that hold the tank down in the ?coffin?. I didn?t find any signs of leaking but had I not taken care of the situation when I did problems where not far down the road.

A guy at my marina had a strong smell of gas in his cabin, lifted the engine hatch in his I/O and seen about 4 inches of gas in the bilge. Clearly a leak, they had to pull his engine out to replace the fuel tank. Even if you don't have gas in the bilge it still doesn't mean there's not a leak somewhere.

Good luck.
