Gas Question

I was running the boat and it slowly stalled out. Having talked to a mechanic, we thought it may be bad gas. I took the gas line out emptied a little and got some of the mixture in a water bottle (left bottle in picture). I saw that the stuff on the bottom which I believed was water but it was an amber color. The bottle on the right has fresh water and fresh gas that I mixted as a comparison.

Where is the disconnect? Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here?

Thank you

Re: Gas Question

How old was the gas in the first bottle? Do you live in an area where regular grade gas is an ethanol blend (E-10). Was the fuel in the first bottle treated with Stabil, SeaFoam, or any of the other gazillion fuel system treatments? Just guessing here but the fuel looks like phase separation of old E-10 fueld and no water. The second bottle contains equal parts water and fuel which is many times more than you would ever see in practice except perhaps in a submerged boat incident. If you run E-10 fuel you need to install a water separating fuel filter and treat the fuel.

Re: Gas Question

The first bottle is older gas that did contain ethanol.
I can't really say for sure, but it could be 6-9 months old. What do you treat the old fuel with?
The second bottle was a sample of gas and water that we made so that you could see the difference between the two.
We thought we had water in the gas in bottle one so I installed a water seperater. The boat will now idle but stalls when we brought the boat up to planing speed. What effects does running the boat with the phase sepearation of old E10 have. Will it cause a cylinder problem?
We saw black oil like substance coming out of the prop when we lifted the motor. I feel something may be damaged.

Re: Gas Question

Thats unburnt fuel and oil dripping out the prop.
Doesn't seem like it damaged anything.

Does either bottle contain oil?
Did you drain the bowls and purge the fuel lines , clean the plugs.
