Re: Gas prices abroad....

Flathead,
Do you really believe those numbers that the article you posted puts on the production of corn? I don't, I grow corn, and I know what the inputs to producing an acre of corn are. He is a way off, it takes at most 14 gallons of fuel to "plant, grow and harvest an acre of corn here", not the 140 that he lists. If you want me to break down my costs I can, but I don't want to bore you with the truth if thats not what you want to believe. Anyway, I do agree with you, that ethanol isn't the answerto the energy issues.

Especially ethanol made from corn, since switchgrass is 3x more efficient than corn at producing ethanol.

Agreed though, those numbers were totally skewed. Of course he knows that already.

Oh, and Bob_VT, someone told you wrong, ethanol is MUCH cheaper. If your gas stations are trying to use adding 10% ethanol to the mix as an excuse to raise prices, you should call them on that BS.

The question here is directed towards folks from places other than the U.S. and it is an attempt to get an idea how much prices there have gone up in the last seven years for the lower grade of gasoline. The secondary question is whether or not their fuels have 10% ethanol.

I think this is a great Q and I would love to hear from folks other than people in the U.S.

Over the past 7 years inflation has been low. The only things that have appreciated beyond inflation is fuel and housing.

Our little corner of the globe is in the middle of a skills shortage (engineers, doctors etc etc), wages are skyrocketing and unemployment is very low.

About this time last year we were paying around the 80 cent mark per litre. Currently $1.25 per litre.
We should just quit buying oil from these A**es for a short while and make them shut the wells down for a few days. See how much they will drop the price before buying again.
There are a million reasons why this would not work, but it makes me feel a little better !!!

I agree with you, it would at least feel good, even though it wouldn't work.

I agree with Kenmyfam and sarge on starting our own embargo, even tho' it probably wouldn't work.
As for inflation, out in B.C it has slowed considerably (luckily) over the last year. The two things that have gone up way too much tho' are housing and fuel (just like Dunaruna). Housing went up 11% last year here and is expected to slow to 6-8% this year. That is on top of record average prices ($400-500k)...which has got to hurt entry level home buyers big time (50 year mortgages now).
As for fuel we were probably pushing $1/litre last year...which is closing in on $4/gallon. I thought that was a lot then, but now its over $1.30/litre...ridiculous.
We are developing the Alberta oil/tar/sands at an amazing rate but that oil is all hitting the international market and is not set up right now for 'homeland' use unfortunately. That is the next biggest reserve of oil available in the world right now, but it is expensive to refine. It has a very high projected output coming available, for the next 100 years nonetheless...go figure.
I just want my 5000+ barrels and I'll be happy.
BP;)
