I just recently purchased a used 2005 Sylvan 1800 sport expedition. On the floor between the driver and passenger seats their is a door that opens to the bilge. When I open this I get a fairly strong gas vapor odor. The gas tank is located in the bilge. Is detecting a gas odor a common problem? Is gas venting off from the tank? I don't think there is a leak, but I am not sure what the problem is. When the dealer placed the boat in the tank to test the motor so I could see how well it was running, he forgot to place the plug in the boat and a lot of water entered into the bilge. Would this have caused a problem? He suggested that I run fresh water through the bilge and pump it out to see if that would help with the odor. It is very cold where I live so I would need to wait till it warms up some before I do that. Any other suggestions or ideas would be very helpful.

Then you need to inspect everything from the fuel lines to the engine and all fuel connections. Run the blower for 10 minutes with the engine cover open. If you don't smell anything then I would start it (on muffs). Run for a little bit, inspect carefully while running, then shut down and start sniffing and looking around. If there is a smell then, or any indication of a fuel leak, then you need to have it fixed properly.
