hey guys im some what new to the boat motor world and i just picked up a nice big river boat with a 94 johnson 30hp and has about 2 hours of running on it and i think im getting my mixes wrong, the owner said he thinks its 50:1 but it dosesnt seem like its idleing and running the way it should, it does smoke alot and you have to twist the throttle alot to get it to rev up. any input?

50:1 is correct.. but you said your motor has 2 hours on it?? you should run double oil for the first 10 hours after a rebuild.

two hours runtime on a 94? if thats the right info , as mentioned, its not even broken in. double up on the oil for awhile and jmo, i wouldnt use any additives until it is broken in.

jmo....just my opinion. run a few or more gallons of fuel through it. and jmo again, its kinda hard to properly break an engine in on a big heavy boat. if it still has issues after more hours on it, its time for a carb overhaul.

Re: gas mixes????

ya i guess it just seems an engine so unused it would have less issues

not at all !! a motor that sits in a garage for years with no runtime is more problematic than a motor that gets run. a carb kit is cheap and a relatively easy job. but as mentioned, run it and see if performance gets better. ( and on a "nice big river boat" that motor will never reach its potential, but should do the job.)

it is best for an outboard to be run monthly to be kept in best condition..to allow it to sit up for years, it will dry the oil off the crank and bearings and they can start to rust some, this can greatly shorten the life of the engine. plus gaskets and seals all dry out and crack/become brittle. clean the carbs.

well the owner is my boss and a good friend, so i know of the boat and what he used it for, and he did run it each year just not long and it was properly winterized and stored in room temp garage.

thats great if he winterized it..specially if he used the fogging oil.
