I have a Johnson 60hp outboard that has a red lever on the front side of the engine that is a gas shut off. I cannot figure out what is the on and off position. A sticker above it shows the lever in the up position and a grayed out arrow shows it going down to the back, but does not say on or off. anyone know the on position?

Re: gas line shut off

What is the model # of your outboard? I believe you are referring to the electric primer solenoid it is not a fuel shut off. The red lever should be pointing up so that it is activated when you push the key in. You turn it down when manually starting the outboard with a rope.

To shut the fuel off to your outboard when not running it disconnect the fuel hose. I always disconnect my small outboards fuel hoses at the tank and engine.

For normal operation, turn the red lever clockwise until it stops
