I have a 1974 mercruiser 140 hp. It runs decent but when I come to shore i'm leaving a gas slick behind the boat. Is my carb. float not doing the job ? I'm pretty sure its coming from the exhaust, any info would be greatly appreciated.

If its running decent I would question that its fuel. That much fuel comming out of the exhaust would cause running problems. Have you checked the drive oil,or trim system oil?

If you are leaving that much gas, it must be running like crap. Float in carb saturated and sank, needle valve stuck, choke plate stuck shut, fuel pump leaking through clear tube into carb, bad gaskets in carb, plugged flame arrestor. Lots of possibilities. Did you open the engine compartment and check anything?
