This is about my 2006 4 stroke 90 hp ELPT outboard. Read alot about gas in oil. Some say it is caused by running cool and making oil because gas left in cylinder drains down past rings and causes the increase of oil and smell of gas. It was recommended to first check operation of thermostat. Well I decided to replace it. Then it was recommended to remove fuel pump and squeeze fuel bulb to see if gas is leaking past diaphragm. I did this and it did not appear to be leaking past the diaphragm. So I put new oil filter and oil and ran the boat. After use for several trips I noticed alot of smoke and a slick on the water. Checked oil and fill was well over the high mark and smelled of fuel again. Does anyone have any other suggestions. I would appreciate it since there is no fishing going on since the boat is laid up and I hate to keep putting in new oil.

What is the serial number of the motor?

How many hours on the motor? Is this something new or has it been this way all along?

What is your usage pattern? Do you troll a lot? In cold water?

Given the age of your motor you may have some carbon buildup on the piston rings. Might be worth it to try using some carbon cleaner to see if that helps.

Might want to make sure the oil pan is only filled to the half way mark on the dip stick. Very easy to add too much oil in the first place.

SN 0T870960 - Bought boat and engine from 2nd owner and don't know how many hours on engine. Was told mostly in Virginia in summer light usage, if you can believe that. Noticed high oil level after purchase. Did a seasonal service and filled oil to top mark. After about a months usage, mostly bass fishing on Lake Griffin in Florida with little use, noticed high oil again. Which is where I am at now. Do not want to put fresh filter and oil back without at least finding out what is causing problem. Is there anywhere else besides fuel leaking pass rings and fuel pump diaphragm problem that could cause fuel to mix with oil?
