My old '58 Evinrude Fast Twin 18 came with the original dual-line metal gas can. It's about half full of the old gas-oil mixture that I plan to dispose of properly,of course. The bottom of the thing is rusting quite a bit around the ring on the outside, but it still seems to hold pressure. The little pump on this thing still squirts like nobody's business,so I know it's OK.I plan to restore it as well.Nice shiny new coat of paint and new gaskets.I'm afraid when I sand it down for painting, the metal is going to be very thin at the base of it due to the rust.Is there any kind of coating or bladder that I can put on the inside of it to prevent leaks? Really want to keep this thing and use it.

Re: Gas can Question

Check with one of the larger auto stores (NAPA) in your area. There are products that can be poured into fuel tanks to coat the interior. Not sure this a good idea for a marine tank but it is used in auto restoration.

I've also seen something called "Tank Creame",.. Some sort of Epoxy treatment......

Any Big Lawn & Garden tractor, lawn mower, snowblower, Dealer will have it "On the Shelf"............

On the Outside, I'd Sand it in good shape,+ Epoxy,+ Fabric it for protection againest Leaks,+ Further Rust.........
Especially Under the Rim,... Outta sight.........
