Hello, my first post here about my Johnson JW10 3hp.

I just purchased some Pennzoil TC-W3 oil and I’ve been reading some people are using a 24:1 ratio while others are using a 16:1 ratio blend. What are your recommendations between those?

I also have a question about what fuel I should purchase, I can obtain non ethanol fuel at 91 octane near me. Is that okay to run in these old engines? If not what else would be preferred.

Thank you.

So ethanol being in the fuel likely won’t damage anything in these older outboards?

I saw in that thread that 87 octane is okay but nothing about it being ethanol free.

I'm no expert on the old OB motors (hope to see some of those folks chime in) but do know that ethanol is bad for the old I/O's. 91 octane gas won't hurt the motor but you may have slightly less HP. The higher the octane the slower the gas burns

Well I just came across a marina I forgot about on pure-gas.org that’s within a 20 minute drive of me that Carrie’s 87 non ethanol so I believe I found what I am looking for.

Anyways, alldodge, thanks for your help!

Happy to have found this forum it will be of good use to me I’m sure going forward as I believe many parts can be found for the old JW10 for sale on this site.

Thanks again!

If you have replaced the fuel lines and the float in your gas tank E10 will be OK. If you by non-ethanol, take your chances. It ain't all true. Some stations lie. Best to be prepared.

I would go with 16:1 on that Motor, not one Anti Friction Bearing in the Powerhead, it Needs all that Oil to stay alive

I run 16:1 in the 3hp J/E motors from the 50's and 60's. I always use 100 percent gas in my old outboards .
