Think about this before buying Garmin.

In the Spring of 2001 I bought a Garmin GPSMAP180 - a several hundred dollar investment with the map card. This spring I got a message on the unit that the memory battery needed replacement and the manual said the only place to get that done was at Garmin. Other than a battery that needs to be replaced, the unit is fine.

A couple calls to Garmin (with wait times of 15 minutes+) and I find that the unit is discontinued (that's ok - the world progresses every minute) but I also find that the unit is NO LONGER REPAIRED by Garmin "because we ran out of parts." When asked how I continue to use the unit - the answer was "without any memory." I figure this unit cost me nearly $100/year - not a good investment and now it is trash because a battery died

Before you shell out the big bucks for a Garmin GPS ask yourself what kind of outfit is standing behind your purchase. You might be disappointed in the long run.

Re: Garmin products

Garmin released the GPSMAP 180 in the fall of 1998. By the time you purchased your unit that model was 3 years into it's product life. To expect a manufacturer of high tech products to support a product for 8-11 years after the fact is being totally unrealistic.

Call Dell, or any other computer manufacturer for that matter, and ask them to repair the motherboard out of an 8 years old computer and see what they say. After they get done laughing, they?ll tell you that it?s not worth repairing and suggest that you buy a new one.
