Hello.
RUINED, 3-day fishing trip with family up Erie.
I Fired the boat up at the launch dock, & hit the power button on my almost new Garmin 93SV.
The screen lit up as usual. Unit was searching for "MAPS",, then the I AGREE page came on,,, no problems yet. After I hit the I Agree button, the page/ unit went dark, I could barely see anything except some black lines on the dark page.

Does anyone know what happened?
Does anyone know of a FIX?
Is there a web page somewhere, where I could find out exactly where the POSITIVE & NEGATIVE pins are, on the back of this unit?

It might be helpful if I can get this unit fired up, here at home.? The boat & wiring harness is still up ERIE! :<(

Thanks TONS,,, for any helpful info.
I NEED to go fish!

What unit do you have specifically?
Makes a difference on procedure and software updates

Sounds like a boot failure. Could be related to a number of other issues, i.e. corrupt device software, hardware failure, under voltage condition, failed transducer, etc..

1. Pull power connector and check voltage on the connector.
Only 4 pins.....insert probe in pin 1 and make the rounds. Insert probe in Pin 2 and make the rounds, etc.

2. Disconnect transducer and any NMEA 2000 connections and try again.

3. Try to update the unit with a fresh copy of the Device Software

4. Perform a Master Reset:
  1. Start with the device powered off
  2. Press and hold the Home and Power buttons
  3. Continue to hold both buttons until "Delete all user settings?" appears
  4. Release the buttons
  5. Select Yes
5. Send back to Garmin for repair

Garmin Tec finally got back to me.
They said that there (might be) a 'glitch' between the viewing eye that operates the automatic screen lighting & diming.
I need to fire up the unit & go to the set-up page.
"Select MANUAL SCREEN BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT",, instead of automatic.
"THAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE".

Bummer is, I have the unit here at home, & the boat & wiring harness is up ERIE.
The 2 VERY SMALL PINS, top & bottom far left are the +- terminals.
How the hec can I safely attach battery wires to those close-together pins?

After searching everywhere for info, I actually talked to 2 other Garmin owners WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!
THEIR UNITS WENT BLACK TOO!
SO WHY, DOESNT GARMIN HAVE A RE-CALL!!?

How do you go to the Setup Page with a black screen?

You don't........if you have a power problem 99.9% of the time the issue is in the cable, not the unit.

My unit doesn't do it.....

A Product recall to change a display setting based upon complaints from two individuals out of how many active users is unrealistic?

If its a software issue its easily resolved in the next software update.
Is your system running the latest version of Software?

If it's an actual hardware issue, I'd push them to replace the unit outright. They have gone out of their way for me in the past.
