Tapered pipe. Neds to be tight, not snug to seal.
I use "blue" grease on mine for ease of install

Does it leak around the plug or the fitting.

If fitting, did you bed the garboard drain fitting with caulk, to the hull?

If plug, put some permetex #2 on the threads and tighten until it doesn't leak. The permetex will also keep the threads from corroding, if you are in salt water.

Did you bed it with 3M 4200 or possibly 5200? Consider yourself lucky that you can even replace the whole thing. Many boats will bolt the top of the three screws into the boat and you can't reach the nut under the engine to replace the unit. The bolt is used for a ground.

Thanks for all replies,

Yes I sealed the fitting well with 3M 4200. I took the boat out on Sunday and used some Rector seal thread sealant on the plug. There was still water in the hull, maybe about 3 gallons. I can't see the plug from the engine compartment since it sits below the motor. So now I am wondering if it's coming from somewhere else- possibly a loose hose or water pump leaking. When the motor was off, I would occasionally look in the engine compartment to check for leaks and saw nothing obvious which made me think originally it was still the plug. It didn't occur to me until after I had it out of the water that maybe it was from the motor while running. I am gonna hook it up to some muffs soon and see what I find while it's on the trailer.

You didn't say what type of boat/engine package you have. If it is an I/O It could be several things including shift bellows, bellows or some others. Could be a transducer leaking or a through hull fitting not hose clamped, a transom bolt, even a lack of seal under the rub rail allowing water to come in the extended swim platform for example. What is your set up?

I`d bet you are getting your water from another source, cooling system, exhaust system, bellows, thru hulls, ect....
