Re: Gar?

Dont worry about the teeth, if their big enough to eat I shoot them in the back of the head and throw them in the bottom of the boat and clean them later. Once a bullet hits them in the head they go limp. I used to duct tape their mouth but scr*w that a bullet is much faster. More people should learn to eat them. Its really not that hard, they taste good, and it might help the population of other fish. Somebody who hates those fish are not gonna make them go away by occasionally wasting them during a bass fishing trip. Just think, you are wasting a fish who has been around 10 times as long as your largemouth. Course, some people dont care...

Re: Gar?

I usually fish for them with cut bait, they are sensitive fish and can be spooked by even the slightest noise. Also, when you see them on topwater they are actually gulping air, as a Gar fish has a primitive lung.

Re: Gar?

I have caught them with just about everything. Seems like the go after anything I throw out there. Seems like minnows and crickets work best here though. If we are having a bad day fishing we just look for gar and they usually bite.

A word of caution. Nail its head to a board before you try to clean it. I had one I was trying to clean 2 days after we caught it. That damn thing hissed at me and tried to turn around and bite me. And that was after I cut him up and started cutting down his back with a pair of tin snips. LOL.

Re: Gar?

Can anyone describe the taste of a Gar fish? I have always been curious if they would taste anything remotely similar to Pike, as they share some of the same traits, even if they are not related.

To tell you the truth, it kinda has a Lobster taste to it. Maybe a lobster/catfish mix with a weird texture.

That doesn't sound bad at all! What is your preferred method of preparing it?

Now you are getting into wife territory. I have no idea. LOL. I catch it, clean it, and she cooks it.

not too bad. Just nail it to a board, cut it up the back with a pair of tin snips, and peal it back. It has meat on either side of the center. I did a google search and found a couple youtube videos that explained it pretty good. Not bad at all.

Interesting, I will give it a shot next time I land one!
