Gaps between my new deck and the hull questions.

Weather permitting, I will have two sections of the deck glassed in the boat tomorrow or whenever. However, the deck plys do not perfectly fit snug in it. There are places that have up to an inch gap.

What I am planning to do is glass the CSM and woven right across with no dips. Then when the whole deck is in, a strip of CSM will get glassed along the the parameter where the deck meets the hull to further secure it.

Sounds good or is there something else I would need to do?

Most of the deck was cut snug to the hull with a 15 degree angle but after I glassed the undersides and ground the excess cloth off some of the deck edge went with it. Now I have gaps.

I don't think is it a big deal but wanted to check first.

You can use some strips of wood and glass them in as filler or just use the csm....no-one walks on that edge.

Could you fill in the gap with some PL Premium before glassing as you would bedding in a stringer?

I used formula 27 to fill the gap at the deck seam to the edge on my rebuild... its polyester based so glass/resin will bond to it, and you can have a level surface to run your glass over for a better bond...

Filler

Hope that helps!

yes....

but the best thing is a product called kitty hair.

it is an auto body filler.......cheap.......its long strand poly fiberglass.......just add hardner and smear with a putty knife......its fiberglass in a can

So would you vote for Kitty Hair over mixing up some PB?

Re: Gaps between my new deck and the hull questions.

Thanks for the tips.

The reason why I ask is that I am out of money and nearly out of luck financially right now. Can't put more funds into the boat than what I have for a while but I also can't let it sit. I move out in 20 days and the boat will be my Uhaul.

If I just go with the 4.5 oz worth of CSM and 6 of woven at the hull/deck join will the boat be safe for light use on the water?

For most of the time it will be a lawn ornament and for display.

When I took the original deck out there was some gaps like this also.

Maybe I can mix up some thick peanut butter but I just have enough resin left to do most of the deck glassing. :(

The edges of my original deck was cut on an angle to parallel the hull, but did not touch the hull all the way around. It was glassed in, with about half an inch gap. I recreated this when I did my deck. h

you dont realy want the wood to touch the sides ,it will cause fractures or a posible point for fracture i bellieve, i used some cut up fiberglass cloth and a real thick epoxy resin mixture to stuff the gap , fillet it, let it cure then glassed it

if your short on cash darren...use the pl glue......just let it sit before you glass it..it will not cure if you gob it on and glass over it....if you use peanut butter....you will use up all your resin making peanut butter....the pl is way cheaper.

I don't know if you are planning ot foam your hull, but I did, and what I did was INTENTIONALLY left a 1/2" gap all around where the deck meets the hull. Then I used some 2 x 4's to make a framework to hold the deck flat. The framework was screwed into the stringers. I then foamed the hull letting the excess come out through the 1/2" gap around the edges. I then just trimmed that and glassed the deck into the hull using 2 layers of 1708 around the perimeter. Worked great and the hull is very solid and the gap was filled with the foam.

I would think that anything you put in there to fill the gap that won't hold water is going to be okay...all you need is something to keep the glass in shape, since that's the strength anyway.

i relied on the foam expanding to lock in the rigidity of the hull, kinda bothered me when i heard the floor groaning and creaking
, but it locked it solid

Thanks for the suggestions. I will just go with the PL adhesive along the parameter and glass it in tomorrow. Sadly, I have to work with what I have.

They aren't even hiring at Subway. :(

Thanks for the kind thoughts. They say the end of the recession is here and the economy is going to pick up. I hope it does soon. :(

God, I hope so. Too many good people suffering from the bs right now.

Canadian Gov't declared ours was at an end about a month ago, great news right? Last week they very quietly let us know that another 44,000 jobs lost last month. so, I don't konw what to think anymore. All I can do is keep my eyes open to try to help those that need jobs, and lend moral support...

Re: Gaps between my new deck and the hull questions.

working on my Batboat keeps me from being depressed to the point where I cannot function. It gives me something to look forward to every day.

I am self employed with a net biz. Consumer electronics has been hit hard since the housing bust last year.

It took me three weeks in June to come up with rent. Usually, I'd have it in 3 to 4 days! :(
