Gap I should have between the transome and edges of the hull?

I am close to grinding out the rest of the transome area and before I make the template I need to know how much of a gap should I allow between the parameter of the new transome wood and the hull?

What do I fill in the gap with? Do I pack it with chopped glass and epoxy?

Or do I cut the wood so it completely covers the stern from end to end, touching the sides of the hull?

The reason I ask this is because I have one of those "long shaft" transomes, picture attached, and I am replacing it one that covers the entire rear. Never done this before.

Its a 1969 Glastron V-145 (don't look it up because it is not in the old catalogs  )

I'd personally go the full width and depth of the transom to replace it. Bed the whole thing in a layer of peanut butter if you have some imperfections between the outer skin and the new transom wood. Dry fit the new one and see how it's going to come together.
