Maybe. If it is tight and hard to turn, and loosens up when you remove the water pump and bearing plate, you have found the trouble. Also, if it has been running very long in an expanded condition, the top end of the absorber will show heat damage, as will the bottom end of the bearing housing.
If you remove the absorber and clean the drive shaft hole out real good and get it out in the bright sunlight and peer down in the hole, you may be able to see the broken ends on the spring.
Sometimes they aren't really broken, but merely expanded from much torture and abuse. In that case you may get away with simply pounding it back together. Er...should I say "pressing" it back together?
