Am I correct when I say a Gale engine was a rebadged Johnny? If not who was Gale made by and how hard would it be to find parts for?

Depends on what model you are talking about. Some are same except for the hood and others are almost totally different, sharing only a few items like magneto. Gale Product was a division of OMC and sold motors to customers like Montgomery Ward, Speigel, Goodyear Tire, etc. They also sold through their own dealers under the Gale Buccaneer/Sovereign names. They all have equal quality but Johnson/Evinrude got some of the frills like automatic choke and electric shift.

My 1958 Gale Buccaneer 3hp. It shares the magneto, clamp brackets, propeller, gas cap and spark plug with it's Johnson cousin. Otherwise it's Gale unique.

Some of the verbiage I have picked up on here indicated that it was a superior branch of OMC. Said that many Gale innovations found their way into the others including Bucaneer.

Might dig thru the archives or hit it on www. Info is out there.
