Fuse Panel

So I searched the forums, and found a number of people in similar situations, but none quite got me where I need to be.

I'm a noob to the electrical/wiring part of things, but I did manage to get a 12V cig outlet installed on my boat (2000 Javelin Venom FS 17).

I used existing wires below my console that I think are there to hook up a fish finder. The outlet powers my cell phone and gps just fine. However, I hooked up an air pump to it, and it blew the fuse immediately. The fuse is 5amps.

So my question is this: My manual doesn't have anything that tells me what the fuses in my fuse panel are for. I could switch out to a 10amp fuse, but I don't know if that is too much for the wire. Also, does anything else run off of that fuse that I could damage?

Items that I would use on that outlet would be cell, spotlight, air pump.

Thanks guys!!

Re: Fuse Panel

You need to do some research as to what amperage draws the various devices you are using are, and what gauge of wire will support those draws.

You ought to seriously consider picking up a copy of this book...

12V wiring is not difficult, but, it needs to be done correctly, with the proper components and safeguards. This book will teach you all you need to know...and you'll be a better boater because of it...

Re: Fuse Panel

The wires for the fish finder and gps will be to light to handle the current that you may used, up to and including an inverter. you will need to wire the lighter in a heavier gauge wire with it's own fuse ~ 20 AMPS, I would suggest direct from the battery in case you put something in there that will take out the main fuse.

Re: Fuse Panel

That's what I figured would be the end solution. I have to do some basic research, but hopefully I can get it taken care of pretty easily.

Re: Fuse Panel

There are kits out there for the novice. It should include the 12v power source, inline fuse, roughly 25' of +/- wire, and instructions for little money.
