Hi guys. I'm going to install a fuel water separator on my Mercruiser 3.0l. Is there anything, tricks, I should know before doing this? Can the filter be mounted too high or too low or does it matter? How do you guys keep gas from spilling all over the place when you cut the line from the tank? Should I fill the filter with gas before installing it? Are there priming issues? Thank for your help guys.

If your fuel tank has the antisiphon valve, spillage should be a minumum. I use old butter bowls to catch the dripping and I use the absorbant pads to protect the floor.

Mounting is not that critical as your fuel pump will draw the fuel through. Mount where it makes sense, keeping in mind you have to change the filter, so make it easy for yourself.

No need to prefill.

Re: Fuel water sep. install. Help.

i'd imagine that you could install it too high or too low but i think you'd need a really big bilge to run into those issues. the biggest hurdle i faced was finding a spot that allowed for easy access to change filters while keeping fuel hoses away from fan belts, heat sources, or anything that could chaffe the lines.

what really helped me was realizing that the 4 hose inlets on the mounting bracket allow you to configure the fuel lines in whatever direction works for your set-up.

on my inboard i ran the lines from the tank up the bilge, past the engine block toward the bow, under the bottom side of the filter and up to the front of the mounting bracket. everything else left the lines somewhat exposed.

mine has a mechanical fuel pump. i haven't tried filling it with fuel first when changing, bad enough having to pull it out full of fuel.

i hope this helped

Re: Fuel water sep. install. Help.

Okay, thanks for the tips. Those answered my questions. I'll give it a try. I think I've got a good spot to mount it that's pretty much in line with the existing route of the fuel hose. Thanks again.

If you mount it where you can get a pan under it,life will be easier.
