it must be open so the tank can get air (to replace the fuel the motor takes).

Thanks..even on newer motors, my dad has one and he run his closed ..

Hmmm...I'd have to suspect something is amiss with your pop's fuel cap seal. The purpose of a vent on the remote fuel can is to do exactly what 12 footer described. <br /><br />I can't speak for all "newer" motors, but my 1994 Johnson 15 hp utilizes a fuel cap that vents without having to manually open a vent screw.
