Fuel Tank Size Reccomendation

Hello Everyone,

I'm repowering a 1968 Starcraft Holiday with a nearly new Yamaha F90L, four stroke. I need to purchase a fuel tank - it will be a topside tank, as the boat doesn't require any significant alterations. What size fuel tank would you reccomend? What options do I have in terms of fuel gauges, if I want to mount one in the dashboard?

Thanks,

Peter

Is it going to be mounted, or portable? If portable I'd get 2 six gallon tanks--easier to manage. You can carry a third or leave it home depending on the trip. Fuel guage? lift and shake.

of course size depends on your use, and your places to put it/them. Also ease of refueling during the trip.

If it's permanent, 18-20 is a popular size for that size motor, and you can always carry a spare 5 gallon jerry can for long days.

I use to have a Glasstream Hydrobass boat with a Mercury 115 on it (very fast too) and it had a 12 gallon tank built in it that would work for a day or so. But I would usually fill it up for every outting. I never ran out of fuel for the ten years I owned it...even running long distances too.

Thanks to everyone who posted on this. I ended up buying a 12 gallon tank. It was the largest tank that would fit under the splashguard without having to alter the structure of the boat. With the Yamaha F90 I now have, the tank has proven to be plenty big enough - that engine sips gas, in comparison with the 1969 2 stroke I used to have on the boat.
