Crap! Wish I'd known I needed that before I dropped $30 on a brand new basic one. Any other way on the cheap?

How 'bout the wire? Sound like the right one? it's between the carb and the distributor.

What I did before I owned a 'swish' timing light was to make more marks on the pulley, with a bit of liquid paper/white-out....

If the wire is black, and is tied to engine ground, yeah, use it....

eah... I'll use this so seldom that I'll go grab a cheap version of the right tool at Harbor Freight for $25. Might as well pick up a flare tool, too in case I have to rig up a custom adapter.

Re: Fuel system test question.

@ Eric, it's a remote filter mounted in the blige. As for the proper fittings..... I figured out that ideally I need 3/8" inverted male flare to hose bib fittings. I found some online, but I'm sure with my luck no store within a 100 mile radius will have them. As a backup I'll get the brake/fuel line you mention.

Also are the flares on these things SAE or AN/JIC? I'm assuming SAE since we're dealing with automotive stuff here, but wanted to make sure.

@Chris, I checked base timing on Sat and it was off by 4-deg (retarded), so I got that set, and it seemed to help the backfiring during cranking. How do I check the advance if the marks only go up to 12-deg advanced?

As for the ground, I think I know exactly the wire you're talking about. It its' the one I'm thinking of, it was bundled up with the purple wire I hooked up to the electric choke (I converted from divorced when I swapped carbs,

Then (in my opinion) you should have USCG approved fuel hose between the separator and the fuel pump, not metal line. The engine is going to be vibrating and moving and the separator is not, as it's not on the engine itself. That movement will eventually fatigue the metal line.

The line between the fuel pump and carb is metal cause both are on the engine and are moving together.
That's the way mine is connected.

Pump is mounted to the engine using rubber bushings... all is ok with vibrations.

Anyone know if the flarrs are SAE or AN/JIC?

I know it's definitely not JIC...

So.... all of this is to troubleshoot low WOT.... assuming i find all is ok w/timing and fuel, next two steps will be compresdion and exhaust. To check the exhauat flapper, can i get to it by removing the flex connections after the echaust manifold?

Re: Fuel system test question.

Compression check should have been #1....

Missing exhaust shutter will not cause low WOT...

Low WOT sticky indicates restricted exhaust as a possible cause.

Got the fuel sys test rig set up btwn seoaratir and pump. Ended up not completely filling the line. There was an air bubble right at the separator
