Chrysler 20HP Model 202HD
Abbreviated version...
Had dirty carb, dirty fuel pump, and air in the line. I fixed all that. Only complaint now. If I have the throttle at low idle and forget to move it to the starting position when I start it it'll run for a sec and then cut off. It will then be really hard to start. Spraying some premix into the carb does the trick. Otherwise it's easy to start. Is this me screwing up or do I need to do a little more work somewhere?
Optional Details.....
It's been hard to start. I generally have to remove the cover and use a pull rope on the flywheel. The engine's own pull starter just doesn't get up enough rpms for the amount of effort I have to put into it.
Troubleshooting:
I dropped the float bowl. Yes it needed cleaning. I cleaned it well.
I took apart the fuel pump (very simple diaphragm pump). It needed cleaning too. I cleaned it well.
Bought a new gas tank and inline filter (the clear kind). Put in fresh gas and oil 50:1.
Squeeze the bulb a few times. It won't crank.
Spray some premix into the carb and it starts easily.
As it's running I can see tiny air bubbles in my fuel filter. They stop when the engine stops. I tighten the clamps but it doesn't help. I remove the clamps, wrap all my fittings with some electrical tape and replace the clamps. Engine starts much easier now and the bubbles are gone.
At this point I've made a dramatic improvement. I have one minor complaint.
After making a quick stop to run up into the woods for a min. I went to crank her up again. I squeezed the bulb, but forgot to turn the throttle to the start position. It idled for a few seconds and then quit. It was hard to start after that. I had to get out the rope and premix bottle again.
Is this just me making a mistake with my starting sequence or does it sound like maybe my fuel pump is just working so so and a rebuild would help?
Also, it just occurred to me that my fuel line could be shortened a lot. Would shortening the fuel line help my fuel pump?
Sorry for the long post. I'm just trying to be thorough.
