As ya'll might have noticed, fuel stabilizers are horribly expensive, come in tiny containers and do not go very far when you have as many motors as many of us do.

Does anyone know of any economical sources for purchasing fuel stabilizer. I'm sure that there is a considerable percent mark-up on the Auto Parts chemicals so if one was to know a source to buy at wholesale, it would be a great savings. I could probably use 1/2 gallon a year.

I use Seafoam. Its an excellent fuel stabilizer. I put it in every thing I got from car to boat, lawnmower to chainsaw, weedeater to gas blower. Works great. Pick up a case of it.

Yes I do, Dont buy it at all!

I dont talk bad about people that do, I know that they are just trying to do the right thing, but I have never used it and dont expect to start now, I have never had a problem and my engines I could use it on sit up to 6 months. On my boats, I just store the engine in the down position, and pump the bulb at least once a month to be sure things dont dry out. I got some Amsoil stablizer, and used it here at the shop once, I poured it into a plastic measuring cup and it ate the plastic. If its that strong, I dont want it in my carbs sitting there. Granted its deluted when it gets into the gas, but Im not going to use it anymore. Ill send ya some for the price of the shipping if you want it, I have lots. :D

Re: Fuel Stabilizers!

The stabilizer I've used is mostly, if not totally, isopropanol. I'm sure it's not the diluted medical grade, but a purer grade. When I worked for a boiler/chill-water chemical treatment co. years ago, we had 98% isoproponal in 55 gal. drums. It was cheap. If you want a do-it-yourself stabilizer, see if paint supply houses have it.

I was just at Fleet Farm the other day and noticed they had gallons of Sta-Bil brand for 29.99.

I couldn't agree more. I never use it in anything, never have any carb problems. My yard equipment sits about 8 months of the year with a full tank, and allways starts up just fine. My old jeep sat for 3 years with 1/4 tank of gas, no stabilizer. It not only ran fine on that gas, but passed an emissions test with a rattling catalytic converter! It takes YEARS for gas to actually go bad. The biggest problem is that it loses octane as it sits, so if you anticipate leaving it for a while get premium fuel. Also, the more gas you have, the longer it lasts, so keep the tank full.

Hi ZMOZ, (Fellow Rebel) :p :p How have ya been? Say, why dont ya come over to the coast and go fishing with me this summer?

I leave my gas tank (about 35 gallons), in my boat about half full (plastic tank), through the winter, I use 87 octane. Then the first time out in the spring, I fill it with 91.

I have a water separator filter, and it has never had any water in it.

I'd love to...maybe we can have a Merc race. :D

BTW - About a month ago I used a little bit of gas left in my boat tank in the lawnmower, the gas has been sitting since september 2003. Still smelled normal and ran fine... ;)

Re: Fuel Stabilizers!

Crap I leave gas in the mower and at the end of summer its all gone where does it go? What stabilizers gonna stop that? Actually I run the mower about once a month in summer. As I leave it long so it does not use as much water. But the gas does evaporate here and I can lose half a tank just by letting it sit in the shed. If I fill it just before winter and I put it away the gas is almost gone by spring.
