My VRO has been disconnected since I got it. It has only used the fuel pump side of the pump for years. Now it is leaking quite a bit and I would like to replace it . Is there an easy switch with a standard fuel pump or do I need to buy another VRO(expensive) pump.

I have read some of the threads on disconnecting VRO but have not seen this issue addressed.

Thank You.

Re: Fuel Pump Replacement VRO for standard

If you look on the port side of the block on the corner next to the starter, you will probably see three holes in a row with a plug screw in the middle hole. This is for a standard fuel pump (mostly used on 88SPL's). You can use the mounting point for a standard fuel pump which you can get from any John/Rude dealer...PN 438556...around $63. You will need two mounting screws and a gasket for it.

You will also need to do some re-plumbing to get the pump outlet to the carb manifold. And you will need to remove the pulse limiter for the VRO pump and plug the hole.

Take a look. Not a huge job.

Find the hose furthest forward on the pump (underneath) and follow it down to the block. It'll be blue facing the pump and gold facing the engine. It should be screwed into the block.

I did it on my '86 50 horse. It is an easy job and gives peace of mind,if you don't trust the VRO.
It may be a mistake, but I think that the pulse limiter is part of the VRO unit and by removing the VRO and moving to another pulse provider on the block you have effectively neutralized any pulse limitation.
