Ok i have a 115hp inline 6 1977 i believe. sn 5077081. It is having problems with running dieing afer a short period of time or if i try to speed up. If you have someone pump the bulb slightly while it is starting to die it usually picks back up and runs. So I am looking for a fuel pump kit for this but cant seem to find one. Im assuming with the way it is acting that is probably the problem. I attached a picture of the pump disassembled. Also what is good to clean it out with? just any kind of solvent?

Re: Fuel Pump Rebuild

It,s not always the pump when this problem happens, but since you have it apart, a new kit wouldn't hurt.
Try this link

You should also check the remainder of the fuel system, if you're getting air in the line through bad quick connect or joint in the line you can experience the same issue.

When I'm not sure, I like to take a new line, drop one end in a tank of mixed fuel and the other end directly to the fuel pump (by passing everything). Pump it up and try it out, if it does good, then you have an air leak somewhere between the pump and the tank (or the tank may not be venting properly).

A way I used to check the fuel pump is to run a line (hooked to the carb side of the fuel pump) into a suitable container, crank the engine...
You should have a good strong sream and it should hold out through several cranks. If the stream is sporatic (squirt, then stop, then squirt again, then stop etc etc) then the pump would be bad.

Re: Fuel Pump Rebuild

Mercury issued a Service Advisory (#2001-17) that provides some troubleshooting guidance on fuel starvation. All you need is a vacuum gauge, a piece of clear hose, and a t-connector to do the troubleshooting. The tests help confirm (or eliminate) various common causes of fuel starvation, such as a failing fuel pump, a restriction in the fuel line upstream of the fuel pump, or an air leak in the fuel line. Once you confirm (or eliminate) the various likely causes, you can then limit your repair effort to what is most likely wrong and avoid spending time and money on those components that are OK. Systematic troubleshooting is how I would approach the problem anyway.

Good luck
