Fuel Pump Problem

I'm new to this forum so please bear with me.

I have a 1998 Evenrude 3 cyl, 60 HP. I have a fuel problem. It won't start but when squirting starting fluid into the carb, it fires and will continue to run with starting fluid. I have fuel past the fuel filter. All hoses (including the crankcase) are on snug.

I therefore assume a bad fuel pump which is a "VRO" Cost of a new pump is $398. I understand there are kits for around $50 to rebuild the fuel pump but all my local dealers want to sell me a new pump.

Questions:

l. Is my diagnosis of a bad pump correct?
2. Should I rebuild the pump?
3. Where do I get a kit (anyone have a part #)?

Thanks,

Don

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

Welcome to Iboats!

First thing is NEVER use starting fluid on a 2 stroke motor...
It will destroy the cylinder walls with no lubrication.

Look here for parts....you will need to know the model number of the motor and drill down to the fuel system,

What happens when you pump the fuel primer bulb?

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

The primer bulb pumps up hard.

All the sites I look at for the fuel pump, show the pump and accessories (hoses, clamps, screws, etc.) but the kits are in a footnote, with no further information.

Thanks

I wouldn't call myself a mechanic, but I'm pretty handy. It could still be a plugged hose before or after the fuel pump. You can get a longer spare hose and plug hook it up at the other end of the fuel pump; between the fuel pump and the carb. Then put the other end of your hose into a 2-liter bottle. If the primer gets hard and when you turn the engine over fuel pumps into the bottle, you know your fuel pump is OK. When my fuel pump was dying, it would bog down until I ran to the back of the boat and primed it again.

I suggest you check out: http://www.ishopmarine.com

I think you're rebuild kit is P/N DMS-139908603. It's $17.82. I'd double-check it with them. Give them a call or drop them an e-mail.

Their fuel pump comes in a little cheaper at $326.36 for P/N BRP-5007420.

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

It is probably not the fuel pump. Are you using the primer solenoid to start the engine? It should be able to do what your starter fluid is doing by simply pushing in on the ignition key while cranking (you will have to use the primer bulb first).

If you want to pursue the fuel pump, you should test it first. Go here and scroll down to the word ALL for links to the documents: http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcvro.html

The "VRO flowchart" shows the testing procedure.

There is also good reading here: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

Take hose from carb side of pump, put temp hose in place into container, crank motor and watch for fuel pulsing out into container. If it does then your issue is beyond the pump. If not then try it again with a known good portable tank. If good then, you have a blockage before the pump. If not good then it is most likely the pump.
Do you have the VRO still hooked up and operational to this point ???
You may want to convert to a premix pump and start mixing your gas. Much cheaper and as long as you mix correctly you will have no lubrication issues.
