I am looking for alternatives to replace my fuel pump. where i can get the original pump or after market?

Or do you guys recommend an electric conversion kit?

i do not know if my problem is the pump but preparing myself in case.

Problem, the engine when running is surging (hope is the correct term), when opening the throttle the engine feels hesitant... it accelerates then it starts stalling then it runs again.
Just finish installing a carburetor kit thinking it was the problem. spark is good and the boat starts with no problem.

suggestions please... thanks in advance

Re: Fuel pump help

well, i changed the fuel filter and "nada" still the same. i will do another test using an external fresh tank of gas then i can rule out filter and gas in tank- then i can move to the pump.

Don't forget that you have an in-tank fuel pick-up screen that could be blocked and possibly an inline (screwed into the tank) anti-siphon check valve that could be stuck and/or completely plugged.

I thought about removing the valve from tank but first i tried using an external tank to run the engine as a test. I inserted the fuel line into a gas can with new none ethanol fuel then ran the engine, pulled the line out of the tank and ran the engine until out of gas; inserted the line again and started back up like a champ then followed by the problem again. Looks like the fuel pump is the problem, the hesitation of the engine is very similar as when an engine is running out of gas but suddenly it gets a shot of fuel and idle back up- i am guessing with no prove or test results...please if you have more input it sure will be appreciated.

Re: Fuel pump help

OK, people i need help here!!!

If you read the thread you will notice i have pretty much re-build my fuel system - new fuel pump, carb kit, fuel lines, fuel filter; have not check gas tank or tank check valve because i tested with an external tank and problem was the same. I do not know what else to do, looks like i will have to bite the bullet and pay the expensive mechanic.
Again my problem is, the engine turns with plenty power and starts also with power- but it hesitates and it seems like it is staving for gas. i will do another check to the spark plugs and timing, and maybe will dismantle the carburetor before taking it to the mech.

please if you have any suggestions, i am all ears and eyes.

Re: Fuel pump help

who rebuilt the carb?
have you replaced the in carb filter and do you have a fuel water separator?
I had the same problem on my 4.3 and it was the carb.
when you put your fuel line into the external tank what fuel line did you use? did you disconnect the hose from the top of the boats tank or did you use a new piece of hose?

I did my own carb re-build, have done it before with other carbs with no issues- until this one

Yes i have a fuel/water separator; when i did the test with the external tank i used the same hose that comes out of the tank - i did empty the filter and made sure there was no gas from the tank in the lines. i have to admit, i used an after market re-build kit from sierra instead of using the Holley brand, no price difference just easier to find. ( i am thinking this is my problem)

what did you do to find and solve your issue? any tips...

thx, Luis

All fuel lines are in good shape, and all between filter, pump and carb are new. The fuel pump is new, Part #vol3854053 (volvo penta).

Talking to friend who is a fan on rebuilding mustangs, he mention the possibility of a vacuum leak in the carb i just re-built.
Today i did not work on the boat, much needed rain in the area; tomorrow i will get back on the job.

will keep you posted, thx
