Hey folks, I purchased a fuel pump off Amazon that is supposed to be a replacement for the OEM part# 388685. But it looks different than the one that's currently installed (not sure if OEM or aftermarket). The new one is taller/thicker and the fuel line bibs are oriented differently. It looks like it will fit physically, with longer mounting screws, but not sure if it will function correctly. I'd rather return it if I'm not sure it will work. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance!!

These pumps are ultra simple to repair.----A new diaphragm will fix them every time.----These pumps are very simple / reliable.----Why is a new pump needed.----What is the motor doing / not doing?

They are all basically the same just assembled differently to give different inlet and outlet orientations ( Although you will obviously need longer fixing screws)

If you decide to alter it take very careful note of the position of all the little parts .You will never work out how to put it back together otherwise.

they have worked for me

if you do not want to rebuild the old one with a kit has suggested.

Some keep the old pumps and scavenge parts from the new one. ...mostly diaphragms.

First the top layer screw cap can be orieneted any way you need.
Longer mounting bolts will take care of the extra thickness.

if....you take appart the old one be sure to scribe the side with a felt marker to put all layers back the same way.

if you take appart the new one reassembly to orient the inlet barb and valve layer can be confusing the first time around . it gets easier afetr 3-4 :)

they have small parts that fly around if not carefull. I crazy glue the base of the springs (nipple) and the small mushrooms that sit on the springs to allow easier layering of the parts back together

see Leroy'S pre 87 and post 87 versions on rebuilding these pumps
Read, read, read and understand the steps.

when all done ...always doa blow test air flows IN to OUT never OUT to IN

OEM would never use a brand such as GXCDIZX.

Tilloston and walbro, however never GXCDIZX

OEM also doesn't sell on Amazon

Hard to start, and would not stay running. Never touched an outboard before this, but I decided to open the pump to see if there was anything obvious to be fixed. Springs started trying to pop out so I tried to put it back together, but not sure if I got it right so I ordered a cheap pump to replace it, just in case.

Since then, I rebuilt the carb and it performs much better so I don't think I did any damage to the fuel pump. But I may replace it anyway since I already have a new one.
