I'm thinking about switching from the Merc factory fuel pump to an electric fuel pump. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Why? "If it ain't broke...."

You'll need to add an oil pressure switch as a safety, and do some rewiring.

Yeah.

You're probably wasting your time and money changing it if it "ain't broke"

There is a fairly good reason to take the mechanical fuel pump off the raw water pump and go to an electric on a bravo though..... (and I'm thinking of doing it too......):D

"Why" . . . cuz it's broke...... I've had two other boats with mech fuel pumps and they have all gone bad at one time or another. On the other hand, I had V-drive's (drag boats) for almost twenty years that I ran the Holley elec pumps in and not one failure. My question to myself is why do I want to replace what is now broken with another of the same thing? I'm hoping someone who has changed to an elec pump will jump on in here and tell me the good vs bad. :)

You will need to wire it up through an oil pressure switch. Hard to imagine that you have gone through 2. I think through my entire 35 years of boating, I have seen one fail.

Well the good is what you indicated. Electric pumps are pretty reliable.

You will need to wire it up so that it cannot run if the engine is not running except when cranking....... (simple normally-open oil pressure switch)

The bad is they cost quite a bit. More than double in my case I think......

Weve had the mechanical fuel pump fail on both of our volvo's. They're 20 years old so it was understandable. The replacement pump also failed(sierra) within 2 weeks of getting it. Both engines now have Mallory pumps.
