I think the warpage is usually found on the bowls......been there already.
Had issues similar to those described.

Found the problem spraying starting fluid around the base of the carbs.
Turned out to be hair line cracks in several carb bodies.

or may not be carbs. A test for leaking lower driveshaft seal is to spray around the base of the powerhead, then listen for rpm change. Not fatal by any means, but would need to remove the powerhead to get at the seal.

Thanks for those inputs, think I will try starter fluid next time.....may be more effective.
Not sure I'm ready/interested in removing the powerhead.

Is the seal you're referring to #1 in the diagram below?

Yes, could be that housing seal. Find a kit and replace all the seals and O-rings.
