Fuel Nipple on Carb Broke (Johnson 60hp)

Hi Forum,

The fuel nipple on the top of my 432666 carburetor broke off as I removed the fuel line from the electronic primer. This is the smaller nipple towards the top of the carb which the electronic primer connects not the lower nipple which connects to primary fuel line.

MOTOR:
1998 Johnson 60HP motor
Impacted is the top carburetor (three total)

QUESTIONS:
1. Can someone please help me find the part number for the press fit fuel nipple?
2. Where can I purchase the part and is it easy to press in without destroying it?
3. If a replacement part (or replacement carburetor) isn't available can I somehow block the port? The electric primer connects to all three carburetors.

ALL help is appreciated. Sorry, I wasn't able to load the photos that I took.

Thanks,
Greg

Did the plastic cover break? The fuel nipple just presses into the cover. If the cover broke, the part number with nipple is 436951.

This carb does not have a plastic cover. Hopefully the photos of both a good and bad carb pasted correctly for you to view.

You can see the damage that occurred to the broke off part when removing it from the carb.

ITYWF that is older than 1998 but its no help The fitting does not seem to be listed as a separate part
If you have just broken the hose tail off and its brass it could be repaired if the other part is serviceable

Other wise find a friend with a small lathe who can make one for you.

You are correct, it is 1989 not 1998 motor. That was a test :) Thank you for your helpful suggestion.

Since this carb port is used while priming the motor during the starting process and since the primer also connects to the mid and lower carb, would there be any negative impact of closing off the damaged port preventing fuel from entering that port during starting? I'd be a happy boater with this fix as long as there isn't a negative impact.

Go to the hardware store.----Buy a brass screw.---Tap the carburetor body.--Drill a hole in the brass screw.----File the screw so hose fits on it.-----Install the screw and cut off the end so you have a nipple to put the hose on !!----There is the at home do a bit of work save some coins method.

any chance some (aluminum) JB weld goo would reattach the barb on the carb ? polish the carb with a SS brush and wash clean acetone or carb cleaner

don't put to much to block the feeder channel into the carb ...

after it sets add another layer of JB weld ... smooth it out with a wet finger :)

see pic of a similar fix I did for a carb inlet nipple on a JW .. The little copper tube broke and I wanted to hose up the tank shut-off valve to the carb with regular fuel hose instead of a copper pipe.

I used a automotive brake line tubing which had proper matching thread fittings for the carb inlet female threads .

I simply cut the tube, kept one good flange end (Jw tank side) & re flanged the other cut end (on the back end...carb side and glued/sealed it all up with JB on the exterior side :)
still works fine after several years

All,

Thanks SO MUCH for all of the good suggestions. Wow, a forum that produces results

Although this isn't my ideal fix, it works and is within my budget and stress threshold. I temporarily put the old damaged nipple back into the carb and I also blocked off the now unused fuel line. The motor seemed to start fine cold with this fix. I will still order the 327706 nipple and see if that will be a better long term fix.

Thanks all - have fun and be safe

Hi boatgreg,

I'm hoping you or others can help me understand something. My 87 Johnson 50 starts readily and idles fine, but once on the water under load it dies. I thought a carb cleaning may solve the problem, so I attempted it myself.

On removing the hose from the small nipple on the lower carb with small needle nose pliers it broke off - SOB!! (the motor is 35yo). I can see that this nipple shoots fuel into the carb, and from your thread, this occurs when you push the key on the remote control in to prime the engine. Is this correct?

It sounds like you blocked off the fuel line to the damaged nipple and the motor still started fine priming only one carb - is that correct? If so, I'll give that a try. I'm nothing if not pragamatic.
