fuel mix for 57 18hp evinrude

Just got a boat with 57 evinrude. Now most engines go on a 50:1 ratio, but on the tank it says 1 quart per tank.Do I mix it as it says or 50:1 please advise.

Mix it 24:1, but it will probably blow up anyway since those motors are such old pieces of junk. It is 24:1 though.

24-1 tc-w3 outboard motor oil. they are horrible motors, send it to me, i will see she gets the respect she deserves.

super great motor. easy to work on. will run forever if treated right.

When I went through masters class in the 70's we were told ( lets see if I remember this right) All motors prior to 1960 (color change Red before green later) Used original mix ratio using latest oil. After 1960 safe to run 50:1 with TCW-3. ( It was TCW then)

You sinply cannot make such a broad statement. OMC introduced 50:1 in 1964. And even if you could, you would get embattled in the arguement of the century.

EDIT: primeturf, in all fairness I do remember the OMC advice that their own brand of TCW oil could be run in all motors at 50:1. I even still have literature to back it up. HOWEVER, do I personally say it is ok? Depends on the motor. And whether or not somebody is going to hold me accountable. And whether or not I want to get into the fight. Besides, I'm not much of a fighter. So I sort of shut up and let the others argue about it.

Even OMC waffled on this. They published about 4 different specs during the evolution from sleeve to all "non-friction" bearings, so you get people comparing official OMC statements that disagree with each other. BRP, of course, has a set of specs for old OMC engines that disagrees with anything OMC published except new stuff uses 50:1.

My preferred version of OMC "official" specs is: anything prior to 1964 uses 24:1, anything after uses 50:1. Simple and direct. Never heard of it causing any harm.
