Even OMC waffled on this. They published about 4 different specs during the evolution from sleeve to all "non-friction" bearings, so you get people comparing official OMC statements that disagree with each other. BRP, of course, has a set of specs for old OMC engines that disagrees with anything OMC published except new stuff uses 50:1.
My preferred version of OMC "official" specs is: anything prior to 1964 uses 24:1, anything after uses 50:1. Simple and direct. Never heard of it causing any harm.
