Those are actually paddles. They would work better since its unlikely that there are oarlocks on a bowrider. To the OP, on a down river run you'll likely have plenty of gas. With a spare 5 gallon can, you could finish the trip at idle if you ran out of gas earlier.

To some boaters, they are oars (refer to previous poster calling them oars). Granted, given the strictest of definitions, you won't be using them as oars since they won't be used in conjunction with oar locks, but under the circumstances in question, oar and paddle are synonymous.

Funny how this stuff goes . . . and funny how we all feel a little differently about things. I HATE anything served in a Martini glass being called a Martini. It's flippin' ridiculous that something with Baileys in it is called a Martini . . . blechhhh. I guess the same could be said about a paddle being a paddle unless it is used in oar locks and then it is an oar. It's like an On-highway tractor is not a truck unless there is a trailer on it, and that a semi-trailer isn't a full trailer because it doesn't have its own front wheels . . . I guess I like that stuff.

Re: Fuel Mileage

Oars require oarlocks to generate the far greater power 2 per person can generate. They also can push or pull the boat straight.

Paddles are a board that can be used inefficiently in anything other than a canoe.

Oar a Hawaiin paddeling outrigger boat. :)

Hey... I don't mind technicalities. For instance, a Martini (to me) contains gin -- none of the vodka stuff. For me, make it a dirty gin martini with Bombay Sapphire. Martinis contain gin!

What were we talkin' 'bout?

Hey... imagine this: You have two beautiful wooden oars hanging on your wall among other nautical things which line the walls of a room with a fine nautical theme. Somebody asks about the oars, which are surrounded by teak wood, scenes of sunsets over lighthouses, some big catches, etc. You have a fine Martini in hand, and your guest is sipping a spectacular red wine...

Y ain't callin' them paddles! They be oars.

I referenced no such club. I made no reference to any such context. Were I in such a context, I'd fully expect them to be called paddles.

You should be paddled.

Re: Fuel Mileage

You guys are a hoot! This guy wants to make a trip that obviously requires a good knowledge of what he can expect from his boat, and all that's been offered is theory and performance data totally unrelated to his boat. He doesn't know what mileage he can expect from his boat, hasn't said if he even knows what best range RPM might be, hasn't said if he has any way to measure 1/3-1/3-1/3 besides an always accurate mechanical gage. My suggestion is to make sure he's within range of a tow service. In the alternative, make sure there's an adequate tow rope, and the other boat operator knows how to use it. Should have some good fuel data when done, or at least know how far he can go on 98 gallons ...
