Fuel issue

I have a 1980 70hp merc. It does not have an inline fuel filter on it. It isnt running correctly either. It will start ok but after it gets about 1/4 throttle while it is in gear it will start struggling for life and then it dies. I noticed yester day that there were paint chippings in my tanks. So I cleaned them out and repainted them so that wont happen again. If trash got in my fuel line would that cause the problem I am having?

he wrote IN my tanks i think that could mean that he painted the inside of the tanks i hape the paint is fuel proof or it will come straight off

Re: Fuel issue

No the outside paint of the tanks. If a strong enough wind came along it would blow it off So I repainted the outside of the tank to keep it from chipping.

Re: Fuel issue

Some how the paint was coming off the outside and getting on the inside. So I flushed the inside with clean gas and then sanded and repainted the outside of the tanks

Oh no. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but I know better that that. So any ideas as to why my motor may be acting this way

Re: Fuel issue

Pull a fuel bowl and see if there is paint sediment in there. If so its everywhere! If not go in another direction.

Re: Fuel issue

I have done that twice and still have the problem of sputtering and bogging down.

brand new spark plugs too. New gas was in tanks. When the mechanic rebuilt the carbs is there some way of setting them that may be off. One dday while I was trying it out it was doing its thing (Sputtering and coughing)
and I hit the choke and released and it seemed to run fine until I throttled it back down. Then I tried to open it up again and it would just struggle and go dead

Re: Fuel issue

If I ran Seafoam through my fuel system could that possibly fix my problem.

Re: Fuel issue

I dont know what a link and sinc is. My primer bulb never gets hard either. No matter how long I squeeze it. I have tried to squeeze it while running the engine but I cant go WOT b/c I just had the engine rebuilt and was told not to WOT until I got atleast 5 hours on it. What is link and sinc:confused
