I have a 1979, 80hp 4cyl merc. needed to change fuel hose between the carbs. I tried 5/16" and its too big for the fittings, cannot tighten it tight enough with pull ties and hose clamps cut into the hose before it will seal. any one else have this problem of give advise ? and 1/4" is to small

i would think 1/4 is the right size - you might need to coax it to go on - maybe put a little bit of 2 stroke oil on the hose end to slide on. my engine has 1/4 in most spots and it's from that same era of engines.

The middle size is 3/8" that fits,

Whatev. 5/16" didn't fit mine either.

Hose ends are dipped in boiling water for a bit.----Then they slide on the fitting.

Mohawk-
I think these guys need to convert to metric, eh. 5/16 is too big so try 3/8! 1/4 is too small so try 3/16! and they wonder why we use metric.

BTW sylicone grease works wonders for installing neoprene hose.

So does a hairdryer or heat gun...or even a vernier caliper (Imperial/Metric) to measure eh?

...here we go again

1/4 = 4/16, 3/16<4/16.

Now, me thinks her porridge is too cold :O
