Fuel gauge issue not working with new sending unit

My fuel gauge has not worked for a while now. I finally had time to check it. I followed lots of online instructions and came up with a faulty sender. I checked voltage at the gauge, it was fine. I jumped the two wires on the sending unit and the gauge moved to full. I also jumped the S to G on the back of the gauge and it went to full. I bought a new sending unit, a KUS reed switch model for US. It is 7 inches, and the tank is almost 8" deep. It replaced the arm type sender. I tested it before installing and got good ohm readings. I installed it and the gauge goes all the way to full. I only have about 1/4 tank. I cleaned all the connectors and tried switching the wires, same thing. What am I doing wrong? I don't see a brand name on the gauge, but the boat is a 2016 Seahunt with a Yamaha 4-stroke.

ok. having just had to replace both my gauge and the sender, there appear to be two different ohm ranges for the sender/gauge. 240-33 ohm and 0-190 ohm. obviously the two need to be on the same "system" in order to work right. Possibly a mismatched gauge/sender set is the issue?

Thanks. I'll look at the old gauge to see if I can tell what it is. I have read that 240-33 is US standard and 0-190 is outside the US.

Aren't KUS senders digital? As in need CAC Buss to read?

Sounds like you have a gauge and sender compatibility issue.

Test the old sender, read the ohms open and closed

Im betting not all of them. I bought a second hand KUS stick style sender and have just a plain white Faria gauge. Works fine in my boat. Have it set up as pink wire for signal, other to ground. easy peasy.

I thought it would be an easy swap too! I couldn't find any markings on the fuel gauge to help identify it, but the tach has a teleflex model # on on it. I believe the old sender is a Rochester (big R on the side) 8341-7000, which shows as 30-240 ohms so my new sender should be compatible.

should be. Check to make sure you have 12v at the gauge, a good ground on the gauge, and possibly check for continuity on the signal wire from tank to gauge. if you have the sender out of the tank, it will make it a bit easier, as you can manually move the float to check the gauge.

these are a dead simple system, 12v to gauge, ground to gauge and tank sender, signal between sender and gauge. thats it. If that all checks out, your gauge may be pooched as well as the sender was.
