Really? You're going to try to save maybe $30 and risk (at best) starving the engine of fuel, and the subsequent damage that'll cause, or (at worst) a fuel leak and explosion or fire?
You'll spend more in a day on booze and fags than getting the genuine Merc replacement kit. As much I as HATE recommending the use of Merc parts, in most cases their products are superior to aftermarket, and the extra expense is justified.
Just buy the right Merc kit and do the job. The part number for upgrading the those old style filters to the new is 35-807172A 1. That kit provides all the parts and instructions to keep your engine (and you) safe.
