Fuel filter/water separator

I've got an aftermarket external fuel filter/water separator installed on a a 2000 Johnson 150HP Oceanrunner. Yesterday the check engine alarm/light came on when I tried to run over 2000RPM. (at idle speed, there was no alarm).

I know this is a fuel restriction issue, so I was going to start by replacing both the fuel filter/water separator as well as clean out the stock engine mounted nylon filter. My question is this....the current external filter is a Sierra filter rated at 28 microns. A mechanic recommended I replace that with a 10 micron fliter. Will doing this further restrict fuel flow? Am I better off just replacing it with the same filter that is already there?

Thanks in advance!

imho, if it worked with the current filter, why mess with it?

Could be overheating and restricting your engine to less then 2000 RPMs.

Try removing your filter and see what happens, also check your temperature gauge or put your fingers on the head. If you can hold them there for 5 seconds its not overheating.

Thanks tashasdaddy....you've got a good point.

Febod, I'll check the temp as well. The engine isnt actually restricting me from going over 2000RPM, its just that once I'm running at higher rpms, the check engine warning alarm gets tripped. When the alarm goes off, the motor is actually running fine...although I assume its probably running lean due to something causing a fuel restriction, so I immediately lowered the rpms (and then the alarm shuts off).

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'm going to start by changing the filters and if that doesnt do it, I'll check the fuel pickup tube and anti-siphon valve.

30 micron sounds fine to me.
i would change the filter and check for restrictions in other areas.
