fuel delivery problem 70 hp evinrude

I have a 1988 Evinrude E70TLCCA that is having a fuel delivery problem. The motor dies out and if I can get to the primer bulb, I can repressurize it to continue running. At first the motor began by dying out when I put it in gear at low rpm. Then it would go if I could idle it and slam it full power. Now it runs great but runs out of fuel. I do not know if I am to rebuild the VRO fuel pump system or the electric fuel primer system. A big difference in cost so I really would like to know which I should go after. Anyone know for sure?

I'm in the process now... I found out by breaking down on the ocean..and getting towed..

You have opptions.. I just purchased a VRO rebuild kit for the feul side..around 100 dollars..its 2 kits.. The oil side is not repairable so if that goes then i will convert to a regular pump and just pre-mix the oil.

You can test the pump by taking the top connection off and grab a small piece of hose and a container...have someone crank the engine while you see what pressure the feul spits out at.. on mine, it was strong at first and then tappered off to spit...

I also just rebuit the floats, bowls and needles on my carbs to be sure they were good and clean too.

Did you have any issues with the fuel primer? I can't find any info on its purpose and if it will cause the engine to stop pumping.

no, the only purpose of the electric primer system is to enrichen the mixture for cold starts (in lieu of traditional choke plates). It's just a solenoid-operated valve that drains fuel into the crankcase. If it sticks closed you'll have trouble with cold starts. If it hangs open it'll flood the motor.
