I am working on a 1992 Mercury 40hp od120072. Buzzing around the lake, the motor all of a sudden shut off. I was unable to get it started and had a friend tow me in. It sat for about 2 hrs. When I went to investigate what might be wrong, it fired right up. It was a very hot day (102), so I thought maybe that had something to do with it. We went back out in the evening to fish, and it did the same thing. Investigating, I found i have no spark on any of the 4 cylinders. I un hooked the kill switch wire and still no spark same result after un hooking the yellow wires from the regulator. ohm tested the coil packs and all looks good. I did some calling to area mechanics and was told it sounded like the stator. After replacing the stator, it ran for about 45 mins (at the dock this time, I'm tired of getting towed in) and the same thing happened. The only thing left is the switch box. I called the mechanic after the new stator didn't work. He said they generally replace the stator and switchbox together. Now you tell me. Not sure what else to look for. I've pretty much tested everything else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Frustrated! No spark when warm.

Check your charging voltage as a bad rectifier will cause a stator to overheat and shut down.....

Frustrated! No spark when warm.

Then you have to check it when its warm. Check the charge coil and trigger coil output when it dies. If they are fine, look to the switch box or coil.
