I have to remove the starter from my 1985 Sun Ray 3.0L OMC motor. My question is, can I loosen the front motor mount and raise the front of the motor up to gain more access to get at the inside bolt on the starter? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Howdy and welcome aboard!

Yes you can. But after you do you will need to remove the drive and get yourself an alignment tool and check/adjust the alignment. (I'll also add that you should probably remove the drive before you "lift" the front of the engine too)

Even if you don't disturb the front mount, if the alignment hasn't been checked in a while (a year or more) you should do it anyway.
(Mercury recommends it every year)

Re: Front motor mount

Should have had my glasses on. Yours is a 1985 model making it a Stringer!

I'll defer to my "Stringer" Compatriots on this one. They don't require alignment like a Cobra or Mercruiser. (the stringers!;) Not the Compatriots!!)

There may be other issues with doing it on yours. If you do not have a service manual and you want to do normal maintenance, you should get one!

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Front motor mount

Should be no problem to unbolt front mount and lift the motor a bit. When you set it back down nothing is going to have changed. I would not lift it more then 3-4 inches. Although it is no problem to change starter with motor bolted down. I had to do that twice in one day and it all went well, and I am 71 years old;). If you have a jump seat on the starter side pull it out. Lay down on the floor and go to work.

Ayuh,.... There's No reason you should have to raise the motor to pull the starter,....
It's held in-place by 2, 3/8" bolts, straight Up, from below....
Should take a 9/16" thin walled socket....

Along with a good strong left arm and bicep... Remember there is a short bolt and a longer one so make sure you get the right one back in the right hole. Only one will thread if you happen to get them in the wrong holes.

Re: Front motor mount

Thanks for the infom. Starter off 2 bolts and starter on top of the rollaround. Not nearly as bad as I thought. Since I am 65 getting up and down from the deck were the worst parts. Many thanks to all the people who helped me.
